Job Interview Questions

The following are frequently asked questions (Q) you may hear during a job interview. An applicant is advised to prepare and be ready for such questions with suitable answers to have a good chance to get the job. Also presented are suggested pointers to answers (A) and replies that could be used during the interview. Job applicants may want to develop their answers, ahead of time before the interview, around the suggested pointers and use them as guidelines.

01] Tell me about yourself.
» Keep in mind what you have stated in your resume (your Curriculum Vitae / your CV).
» Mention your experiences and relate them to the company.
» Mention your strong points and relate them to the job you seek
» Mention your values and interests as they relate to the job to which you are applying.

02] What are your main strengths?
» Mention your major accomplishments.
» Show that you are proud of these deeds.
» Mention details a quality you have that would be in high demand on that job.
» Emphasize your initiative, and your leadership ability.
» Emphasize your knowledge of the industry, and your specific skills for the job.
» Substantiate the above qualities with past experiences on other jobs or in other areas.

03] What are your main weaknesses?
» This is not the place for you to confess your weaknesses.
» Reply with confidence. Point to unimportant, nonjob-related areas needing improvement.
» You can present a strength as a weakness. See the following points for examples.
» You can say: I get upset with myself if my timetables are not met.
» You can also say: I find it hard to keep my promise to myself to read one book per week.

04] Why are you interested in working for this company?
» Make sure to read about the company for which you want to work .
» Prepare yourself with facts and figures about this company.
» Learn about the company’s strong points and success stories that impressed you.

05] What did you choose this field?
» This is where and when you can mention your strong interest and knowledge.
» You can also explain that this field uses all your skills and abilities.
» You can state that you were successful in that field.
» You can mention that there are opportunities for you in this field.

06] What are your interests outside work?
» Make sure to show that you use your time wisely.
» Show that you have varied interests.
»Demonstrate that you get along well with others.
»Demonstrate that you are a participant not a spectator when with friends and teams.
» Briefly mention your special talent, hobby, or skill.

07] How do others describe you?
» Make sure to show a positive picture of your social relationships.
» Show that you get along with your coworkers and subordinates.
» Demonstrate that you are respected by your present/prior employers.

08] Tell me about your education.
» Make sure that your reply is positive.
» Speak well of your alma mater (school or university).
» Mention if you worked to put yourself through school.

09] How do you handle pressure?
» Mention examples of pressure situations that you handled in previous jobs.
» Briefly describe how you handled these situations.

10] How is your previous experience applicable to the work we do here?
» You must slant your previous experience to fit the present opportunity.
» If your earlier experiences do not fit, speak about your strong points.
» Mention your personal initiative, your punctuality, organizational abilities.
» make sure to show how these strong points apply to this job.

11] Why did you leave your previous job?
Why do you want to leave your present job?
» Make sure not to speak negatively about your present/previous job or company.
» Do not speak negatively about your present/previous superiors or coworkers.
» > Show that you are looking for a new and challenging job with this company.
» Show that this company will help you grow to reach your full potential.
Show how this job can use your special talent, and skill.

12] What is important to you in a job?
» Do not discuss salary or benefits till the job is offered to you.
» State that you are motivated when you know that you are doing a good job in the company.
» State that you are motivated when you know that your opinions are really counted upon.
» State that you are motivated when you can contribute to meet the company’s goals.

13] Why should I hire you?
» This is where you sell yourself. Think hard and relate your earlier successes to this job.
» You can Try: I am a quick learner.
» You can Try: I am experienced in this field.
» You can Try: I am highly motivated to succeed in this job.

14] What are your long-range goals?
» This is an important question. It will show much information about yourself.
» Your answer will show your foresight, realistic outlook, and career planning ability.
» Your answer will show your knowledge of self, commitment to company and profession .
» So, in answering state your career plan. Show commitment to your field and company.
» Your study of the company will tell what posts you could expect to have in 5 and 10 years.
» State that you work hard and that you are determined to reach goals that you set.
» If asked: What do you expect to be doing in 10 years?
» You can say: I want to be the best or one of the best, at whatever I am doing at that time.

15] What is your current salary and what do you expect?
» Do not talk about salary till the company offers a job and says that it wants to hire you.
» Ask about the intended salary. Keep in mind the minimum salary you can accept.
» Read Trade and professional magazines to determine the range of the salary for that job.
» Talk to others doing the same job.
» When you know the typical salary range of the job ask for the top portion of the range.
» Tell the interviewer that you have a career plan that you like to meet.
» Tell the interviewer that you would like to grow with the company.
